In a move that may prove costly for the Q8, Mercedes is preparing to lease the car from Audi for $18.5 million, according to a report from The Verge.
The deal, which will run through 2020, would allow the Q88 to be used by a variety of Mercedes owners in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
Audi, meanwhile, is hoping to make an even bigger profit on the car by selling the car to Mercedes for a higher price.
The Q8’s lease deal, according a person familiar with the matter, will allow the automaker to rent it out to several Mercedes owners over time.
The person declined to be named because the deal is confidential.
Mercedes is reportedly looking to lease out the Q80, a similar-sized luxury sports sedan, as well as the Q3, a midsize crossover SUV.
Audi has reportedly also been working on a lease deal for the new Q6, a large crossover SUV that would likely be a hit among buyers in Europe.
